I don't know what the Dutch king really means by "the welfare state is dead". Every welfare state will die eventually. A few may be killed off before they drag their nations down Greek style. Most will fail catastrophically. They're all unsustainable.However, most governments talk a good game about "spending cuts" and "austerity", but few actually spend any less. Instead, they reduce the rate at which they increase spending, then call it a "spending cut". Our politicians are particularly bad about that.
The video takes a potentially well-deserved jab at the king. If it's true that the Netherlands spend 100 million Euros per year on the royal family, then that should be among the first budget items to get the ax.
